Ok, you enjoy yourselves and we’ll see you next week,
Yessirree, it is that time of year again when Sanibel Island’s best-of-the-best chefs compete for the highly sought after “Taste of the Taste” Award signifying that their dish has won the 29th Annual “Taste of the Islands” Top Honor!
Make sure you mark your calendar for Sunday, November 21st from 12pm to 5pm at the Sanibel Community Park on 2231 Periwinkle Way, Sanibel Island.
You better get there early and definitely bring your appetite because it will be an action-packed 5 hours of sampling every kind of delicacy that you can imagine. A new twist this year is that the judges have asked that each chef include one indigenous ingredient in their dish to give it a more “local” flair… this should be really interesting!
Halloween is such a great party on Sanibel and Captiva!
And nothing tops Captiva Island’s ‘Tween Waters Inn party each and every year… Around 800 very creative folks (adults only) get all dressed up in the best costumes known to man to compete for the top prize and it is unbelievable just how great some of these costumes really are…
As you can see in the photo above, Rob was a fanciful Dr. Seuss last year and I was a curly-haired pirate girl! Fun stuff!!
We had a great time and are really looking forward to tomorrow night (SATURDAY!) when we will surprise you all with our latest inventive disguises…
Remember, the party is on Saturday night, the 30th, this year, rather than on Halloween night itself, from 8pm until 2am with a cost of $15 at the door, so don’t be late!
I love this time of year because there is just so much to do and so many events happening, that it’s sometimes hard to keep up!
Well, if you have kids or grandkids, make sure that you don’t miss the Pumpkin Painting and Harvest Party on Monday and Tuesday (Oct 25-26) from 8am-5:30pm at the Sanibel Recreation Center. A good time is sure to be had by all and don’t forget to bring your swimsuits!
The Sanibel Community Association will also be holding its annual Fall Family Carnival on Sunday, October 31st from 5-7pm at 2173 Periwinkle Way. It will be packed with lots of fun activities for the kids including an indoor carnival, a costume contest, a hayride, games and lots of prizes! Be sure to stop by!!
For more juicy details on all of these fun events, you can check out “Halloween on Sanibel”
Have a great week leading up to Halloween weekend!
Well, I for one, LOVE Doc Ford’s and tell everyone I can, to stop by and enjoy the great food and fun atmosphere!
We have a lot of great places to eat on Sanibel Island, but Doc Ford’s is always a crowd pleaser with a very loyal following, especially for the college football games…
Located on 975 Rabbit Road and open 7 days a week, this local jaunt is all the buzz come game time.
So come on out and enjoy the really wonderful menu offered well within your budget, and don’t forget to bring your friends!
You can visit the Doc Ford’s website here to view the entire menu and some cool photos, as well as follow their blog at Doc Ford’s Blog
Of course, you are fully aware that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, right? Well, if not, then where the heck have you been?
Apart from the adorable pink bracelets being handed out from every South Florida post office, there have been, and continue to be, multiple events going on all month long to raise money for this tremendously important cause… maybe you’ve already taken part in some of them…
But, just in case, I wanted to highlight a few events coming up in the next couple of weeks throughout South Florida and especially nearby, here in Ft. Myers.
Yep, it’s that time of year again… when we get to experience all of the wonder and awe of our beautiful J.N. Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge!
So, start planning ahead as to which events you will attend with the family because the fun begins on Sunday, October 17th with “Family Day” and runs through Saturday, October 23rd.
There are so many things to do with the kids, including wildlife shows of the many different reptiles and even bald eagles. There will be a “touch tank” and a “butterfly house” and even a conservation cartoon drawing contest. Lots of opportunities to create cool nature hand crafts and face painting.
You can take a tram tour through the refuge or go on a cruise around it. More hands-on would be to take a guided kayak tour and get up close and personal with the wildlife!
Just about anything you could ask for during this action-packed week…
A sad day for Sanibel Island… as the news spreads of the passing of a legend, Mr. Sam Bailey.
Born and raised on Sanibel before there was even a causeway connecting the island to the mainland, Sam Bailey has championed this beautiful area of Florida for more than 70 years!
He and his three brothers all worked at the Old Bailey Store, carrying on the family business that began in 1899. One of the oldest establishments on the island (and all of Southwest Florida, for that matter), the Old Bailey Store is still in business to this day and is currently located at 2477 Periwinkle Way.
“Sanibel Sam”, as he was known, has a very rich and meaningful story, from his days of playing pro-football for the Boston Yanks in the now-defunct AFL, to his head football coaching and athletic director duties at University of Tampa for 60 years! His interests in the historical preservation of Sanibel Island’s treasures has transformed the island to what it is today.
Nothing will ever be the same on Sanibel without Sam Bailey.
Services will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 2, at the Sanibel Historical Village, 950 Dunlap Road, in tribute to the original location of Old Bailey’s General Store way back in 1899.
A huge wave of gratitude goes out to Sam and the entire Bailey family for their contributions to our personal livelihood today on Sanibel Island…
We hope to see you all at the service to honor and respect this great man…
Not sure how many of you out there are on Facebook, but I thought I would share a very quick video with you that will help you get more customers in the door to buy your “stuff”, whatever it is that you’re sellin’… these pages work great for just about any type of business, especially restaurants, outdoor activities, events, fundraising, whatever it may be…
We LOVE Facebook and have met a ton of people from our Business/Fan Page. As of this writing, we have 819 “Fans” and that changes every day! You can see our page right here at SanCap One Source Realty
Take a peek at this quick and easy video to set up your own Business Page and then you can start seeing some action too! It’s really easy (and fun!)
Yep, that’s right, the Second Annual F.I.S.H. 10K Run is coming up soon and we sure wouldn’t want you to miss it!
“Friends in Service Here (F.I.S.H.)” is a non-profit, volunteer organization that helps those in need on Sanibel and Captiva Islands and this year’s fundraising event is sure to be a big hit after seeing the turn out last year.
Over 500 runners from all over are scheduled to take off running at 7:30am on Saturday, October 16th. Are you registered yet?
It’s great fun and it’s for a really great cause, so make sure you head over to the Sanibel Community Center, even if you’re not running, to experience the Expo and help cheer on the participants!
Oh, I almost forgot, if you’re coming from out of town, the Kona Kai Hotel located at 1539 Periwinkle Way, (239) 472-1001, will be offering a special rate of only $79/night if you mention the F.I.S.H 10K… Ya gotta love discounts! ;)
I think this is a little off the beaten path of my normal posts every week, but I just couldn’t resist sharing this wonderful little video that truly made my day!
Inspiration, hope and love never hurt anybody… Enjoy it and pass it along to your friends if you’d like, it’s a sweet message worth sharing…
OK, it’s time we pay tribute to a special group of volunteers right here on Sanibel Island called The Hammerheads!
The Hammerheads are a small group of men consisting of Harry Bertossa, Demo Scutakes, George McKinnell, Wally Kain, Sandy Montclar, Les Forney, Sam Bailey and Dean Skaugstadthat volunteer over at the Sanibel Historical Museum and Village. These steady-handed, clear-minded, open-hearted (shall I go on… :) ) men should make us all proud!
Because it is through their efforts that ALL of the boardwalks at the Museum and Village have been replaced with environmentally-friendly Trex Lumber for the safety of all who visit our beautiful historical site…
Needless to say, you must get out there to 950 Dunlop Road and see their handywork, it’s really somethin’!!
You just can’t beat Ellington’s when it comes to atmosphere… and there are plenty of folks to testify to this fact as they return week and week soaking it all up!
Apart from the incredible food, the entertainment gives New Orleans a serious run for its money!
Right now, Danny Sinoff and his crew of three or four starts around 7pm and runs a few sets until just after 11pm… EveryNight! (except Monday…)
So, are you up for it?
You will probably see Rob or I there because we LOVE this place!
Get your VIP status card and save some money (see left)…
Have a great weekend,
Sandy and Rob
p.s. Yep, lots of great homes for sale for those looking for investments or great deals… SanCap One Source Realty
Yep, the ordinance was finally passed on July 20th that allows for the eradication of this nasty invasive “weed”, the Brazilian Pepper Tree, that has the potential to change the entire foliage habitat here on Sanibel Island if continued to let thrive untouched!
Property owners in Zone 5 (see map below) have 90 days until October 20th to cut down and “treat” the stump and roots with the appropriate herbicide. You can read details as to how to do this here: Brazilian Pepper Tree Treatment
If you have any questions, be sure to contact Holly Downing at Natural Resources, 472-3700

Well, this week I want to let you know that the “arts” on Sanibel and Captiva are alive and well!
BIG ARTS has a lot of great things going on this summer, such as their kids’ summer arts camp which runs weekly through August 13th, M-F from 9am to 3pm for kids of all ages to enjoy… You can check out the details here: BIG ARTS Summer Camp 2010.
There’s also the Sanibel-Captiva Arts League with its open exhibit on display at the Philips Gallery through August 16th from M-F. 1pm-4pm
If you are a die-hard fisherman and you don’t live on Sanibel or Captiva Island, then what are you waiting for?
Homes couldn’t be better priced… ummm, can you say “serious buyers’ market”? There is great inventory and, as you know, interest rates are at all-time lows.
Over this past two weeks, including the long 4th weekend, our resident “Fisherman Reporter”, Captain Bill Russell, reports that fabulous catches are being snagged early morning, before the heat and thunderstorms set in. This summer’s been a hot one so far.
Tarpon season may be ending, but they are still plentiful, alongside 20+ inch trout, redfish, bluefish and Spanish mackerel… Amazing!
So, if you’ve been pondering a move to this one-of-a-kind fishing paradise, Sanibel and Captiva, then stop making excuses and hop on it. We’re just a quick and friendly phone call away!
Have you heard about this website called Moms Like Me?
Well, they are all over the U.S. and we have a pretty active chapter right here on the Florida Gulf Coast. It’s a place for moms to communicate and form community groups of like interests, play dates for their kids and just overall fun-ness through announcements and such. A great idea, to be sure.
I spotted something fun on their page that I thought could be of interest to Lee County kids, and that was a casting call to be held TODAY, Friday July 9th in Ft. Myers. All the details are here: Casting Call
They are simply looking to show kids what it’s like to work in front of a green screen and how to prepare local weather and news reports. Your child could be selected to be a local meteorologist and/or child anchor featured in local programming on channels NBC2 and ABC7.
Don’t worry if you miss the live casting today because the stations will accept your child’s uploaded video casting until July 31st. So check out the detail page above and see if this could be something fun for your child!
This 12-year-old girl from Cape Coral who always vacations off the coast of the Keys with her family was fascinated by a sunken ship as she snorkeled with her brother and decided to create something really interesting out of her curiosity.
The article, “12-year-old snorkeler develops documentary of sunken ship” explains that Delanie Kirwan got all the permits necessary to film the wreckage and has discovered that it was the personal yacht of Henry Ford, which at one point, was docked a good portion on Sanibel Island. Fancy that!
It’s a nice article that was a breath of fresh air in the midst of the typical bleak news these days!
Hope you all have a great long weekend and Happy 4th!!
