Ok, this post is for all you fishermen (and women) out there…
Due to a colliding of the July new moon and strange counter-clockwise winds out of the south and east (versus the normal clockwise winds out of the south and west), the next seven days should make for phenomenal fishing. Only overcast skies could dampen the feeding frenzy that the fish will partake in this entire week.
The best hours to fish will be from 7:30-10:30am and again from 7-10pm with the evening peak being between 8 and 9pm. The sunnier the day, the more the fish will be active. The worst time to fish is said to be from 2-7pm UNLESS the morning is overcast and the afternoon is sunny, causing the fish to shift their feeding feast into the sunnier hours of the afternoon.
So, what are you waiting for? Grab your rod, call your buddies or notify your spouse and make plans now because once this new moon passes you’ll have to wait until next year before this phenomenon comes back around!

Enjoy yourselves and have a great week,

Hi all!
So, you guys know all about the Sanibel Sea School, right?
This is the place dedicated to educating kids (and adults!) about our marine ecology and marine conservation issues here on Sanibel and Captiva.
Their Summer Camp is starting this week and each and every week until the end of August focuses on a different species that lives here in our local marine environment.
As everything is experiential and hands-on, the students get to experience everything up close and personal, which gives a whole new perspective to the creatures and the ocean itself, versus simply reading about it in a book!
You can read more about the program and view the entire schedule of events over at their website: Sanibel Sea School’s Summer Camp Class Calendar
They also have a great Facebook page over at: Sanibel Sea School Facebook Page
So, we hope that your kids and/or yourself, get out there and have fun learning about the incredible marine ecology that Sanibel and Captiva have to offer!
Have a great week,
Sandy and Rob

Hey guys!
A quick, last-minute heads up for a fun volunteering opportunity coming up this Tuesday morning, June 7th at 8:30am on Bowman’s Beach…it should only take about an hour.
This will be the third and final installment toward the very worthy cause of restoring the oyster bed reef in Clam Bayou.
The Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation‘s Marine Laboratory has already shoveled, bagged and relocated literally tons of shells to Clam Bayou in order to bring back the vibrant and eco-stabilizing environment of the oyster beds.
This is a great opportunity for us all to give back to the island and contribute when we can…
You can contact Sabrina Lartz at 395-4617 and you can also find out more information over at CaptivaSanibel.com
Hope to see you there!
Have a great week,
Sandy and Rob

‘Tis the season when we all need to be on extra high alert for our most sacred island treasures…. the sea turtle nests hiding in the sand!
Easy to spot when you’re looking for the mother’s tracks coming up from the beach, these nests need to be identified and well-marked so as to prevent any unforeseen mishaps.
So, lights off at night and careful attention when walking on the beaches with a special note to the picking up of any litter or beach chairs that you see. Also, extra vigilance with any extra noise or romping from your pet pooches will make this a happy and safe nesting season.
Our turtle guests have enough to worry about these days (sigh), so let’s do our part and make their stay as welcoming and comfortable as possible!
Have a great weekend!

Uuuuuf! There are no words, are there?
As we all brace for the possibility of oil washing up on our unbelievably beautiful shores, preparations have begun and emergency plans are being activated in an effort to minimize the damage and save as much wildlife as is possible.
The biggest concern at this time of year in particular, of course, is our already endangered sea turtle friends making their way to our beaches as we speak.
We can only hope that they will sense the danger and migrate more south this year.
Sanibel Island (and all of SWFL) could be spared if the weather and ocean currents cooperate, that is, barring the assurance that the guilty oil rig causing this environmental castastrophe can be repaired quickly and stop the “hemorrhaging” of its gushing oil.
You know that I try to keep this blog as upbeat and positive as possible, giving you tidbits about Sanibel and Captiva that anyone visiting or planning to live here would like to know about, however, sometimes there are issues that affect us all and need to be brought up. This is one of those issues.
So? What can we do at this point?
Best advice? Contact the Sanibel Captiva Conservation Foundation or the J.N. Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge for the lastest information and the possibility for you to volunteer to help…
This affects us all and should be taken seriously… Our collective “fingers crossed” that Sanibel and Captiva Islands are spared on this one!
Talk with you next week,
Sandy and Rob
