Hey guys!

Well… as Hurricane “Irene”  makes her way up the East Coast, we are quickly reminded that it’s THAT time of year again… Hurricane Season in Florida!

Forgive me if I can’t get the images of being smacked by Hurricane Charley in 2004 out of my  head… but that’s just something you never forget.

Even though we Floridians know full well that it’s pretty unlikely for hurricanes to strike the same area twice in consecutive years, we continue to be ultra-prepared nevertheless.

From a historical perspective, “what comes around goes around”, so they say… pun fully intended.  So, I thought I’d share a few historical graphics (below) depicting exactly where hurricanes in Florida have fallen over the many years, just to make us feel super blessed when it comes to not typically being hit head on.

We need to count our blessings and hope that this year leaves us unscathed and smiling!

Have a great week,

Rob and Sandy

Yikes… Time flies!

Yep, it’s that time of year again, when we need to brush-up on the basics of hurricane management and get ourselves completely prepared, in the hopes of never needing to ever use our brushed-up “hurricane skills”.

Well, as with every year, the City of Sanibel puts together their annual “City Hurricane Plan” and this year the public meeting will be held at the Big Arts Center on Dunlop Road on Wednesday, June 1st, from 1pm-3pm.

There are many things on the table to discuss such as the predictions for the upcoming 2011 Hurricane Season, Family Hurricane Planning, City of Sanibel Building codes and much, much more!  Everyone is welcome!

You can read more about it over at CaptivaSanibel.com:  Hurricane Season 2011 Seminar on Sanibel Island

Hope to see you there!

Have a really great week,

Sandy and Rob

Cold on Sanibel Island?

Fish Struggling with Freezing Temps on Sanibel Island Well this has been quite a month for weather, wouldn’t you say?

I don’t ever remember it being this cold down here… and one group that is not liking these frigid temps at all are the fish, particularly snook!

We are seeing huge numbers of dead fish floating onto shore, and even floating dead in some of the canals, which our marine biologists tell us is due to the fish becoming “dormant” when their water turns so cold and then forgetting to eat and therefore, they die… well, that doesn’t happen to me, I eat more when I get cold!  :)

But, one positive note in the “circle of life” is that the birds are having a feast on the dead fish, which is also thought to be keeping them alive in these chilly temps by eating more.  And so life goes…

It turns out that this is happening all over Southwest Florida, but it’s particularly disturbing when it starts affecting local “treasures” such as the probable death due to freezing temps of our 30+ year old female American Crocodile.  Really sad!  At 12-ft long and 300 pounds, she was found dead on a trail along the Sanibel River.

Well, I’m just glad that things are starting to warm up again and getting somewhat “back to normal”… this truly has been a strange winter “weather-wise” for everyone it seems…

What are your thoughts?  How are you staying warm?

Have a great weekend,

Sandy and Rob

Brrrr!

We are still in Florida, right?  So it seems… however, we are to expect 30 degree Fahrenheit night lows for the next 5 days… Wow!

As the whole nation goes through a deep freeze, Florida is no exception and obviously, there are real concerns out there for citrus crops, people not prepared for the cold weather and of course, our natural habitat, animals included.

Even our beloved Manatees are swimming for their survival to warmer waters!

Here is a snippet from the City of Sanibel’s website:

The City of Sanibel encourages you to take the following cold weather precautions this weekend:

  • Bring pets inside a covered area
  • Bring potted plants inside and cover outdoor plants
  • Do not use charcoal or gas grills inside; they produce deadly carbon monoxide fumes
  • Check on your neighbors, friends, and relatives to make sure that they are prepared for the colder weather
  • Do not use extension cords if you are using electric heaters and be sure to keep the heaters away from curtains and other flammable items
  • Dress warmly in layers, if you will be outside for extended periods
  • Monitor local media to stay current with weather conditions

So, bundle up and stay warm this weekend!

Everything will be fine, we are supposed to start warming up again mid-next week, so hang tight!

Until next week, have a great one!

Hurricane Season 2009Well, well, well…

Yes, I felt it was time again to remind everybody of the importance of being prepared for our annual storm season.

Even though money’s tight these days for everyone, we shouldn’t skimp on buying the things that truly could save our lives if the situation ever arises.

Five years ago, Rob and I, ourselves rode out Hurricane Charley and let me tell you, it was scary!

But, we were prepared, thank goodness, and therefore, no tragedy happened with us personally.

Below I’ve included the National Hurricane Center’s “Disaster Kit” List, as well as a video also showing things that you should always have at the ready.

Let’s all be safe this season and hopefully, we won’t even need to use it, but NOT having these items on hand is not a risk that I want to take…

Good Luck!!

Well, today I thought that it would be fun to talk about something that is so much a part of our daily lives here on Sanibel that we often take it for granted and don’t understand the amazing process that is happening right under our noses 4 times a day!

What I’m speaking about are the TIDES!

High tide, low tide, spring tide, neaf tide… how is your “tide knowledge”?

Do you know how our amazing oceans work or do you just say “Hey, at this time of day we can see and find more shells!”

Well, tides are fascinating, really, and I’ve found a couple of very interesting articles and even this fun and informative video above on exactly how the tides work!

As newcomers move to Sanibel and Captiva Islands, that is always a question that eventually arises (pun intended :) ), so I thought it would be informative to address it here in our Sanibel Blog.

Below are 2 links:  the first one does a really good job of describing not only “Tides”, but also “Waves” and “Ocean Currents”… fascinating stuff!

And the second link is our local Sanibel Island Tide Data charted out for you in real time, which will show you exactly when to go perform “The Sanibel Stoop”!

And lastly, the video above is just plain fun!

So, that’s it for this week!

Have a great weekend,

Sandy and Rob
