Hey guys!

Well… as Hurricane “Irene”  makes her way up the East Coast, we are quickly reminded that it’s THAT time of year again… Hurricane Season in Florida!

Forgive me if I can’t get the images of being smacked by Hurricane Charley in 2004 out of my  head… but that’s just something you never forget.

Even though we Floridians know full well that it’s pretty unlikely for hurricanes to strike the same area twice in consecutive years, we continue to be ultra-prepared nevertheless.

From a historical perspective, “what comes around goes around”, so they say… pun fully intended.  So, I thought I’d share a few historical graphics (below) depicting exactly where hurricanes in Florida have fallen over the many years, just to make us feel super blessed when it comes to not typically being hit head on.

We need to count our blessings and hope that this year leaves us unscathed and smiling!

Have a great week,

Rob and Sandy

This post goes out to all of you who have been touched by war on this long Memorial Day weekend…

It’s important for us to have a day of remembrance at least once a year and on this day I wanted to share with you a powerful video that I found online that has incredible music and some beautiful imagery, so I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Rob and I join all of you today in the hopes of ending war and remembering those that we have loved and lost.

Have a wonderful week,

Sandy and Rob

Wow!  Did this year go by fast, or what?

Well, so much has happened on Sanibel and Captiva this past year that I thought I would do a little recap below to remind us of just how blessed we truly are!

In January, we had the First Annual “Dancing with the Island Stars” and in February, we lost a true Sanibel Island inspiration, photographer Ted Cross.  In March, Captiva and Sanibel Islands were voted #8 in Barron’s Magazine for the “Best Place to Build a Second Home” and in April, we put the spotlight on our amazing Historical Village!

May began the nightmare Deepwater Horizon debacle, which we reported on extensively throughout May, June, July and August.  Also in July, we focused on the BIG ARTS Summer Camp and in August, the ordinance for ridding the islands of Brazilian Pepper Trees was approved and the work began.

In September, Sanibel lost an island icon, Sam Bailey.

In October, all of Southwest Florida shined bright, as money was raised from all over the area for Breast Cancer Awareness Month and in November, among all of the festive events going on, the “Taste of the Islands” restaurant competition had another phenomenal year!

Last, but certainly not least, in December, our very own “Island Home Adventures” Tour Van arrived, which takes all of our clients around the islands in style searching for the home of their dreams!  Have you seen it yet?  It’s so beautiful…

So, there you have it!

2010 in a nutshell…

We can’t wait to see you all in 2011… It’s going to be a GREAT year!

Happy New Year!

Be safe and have fun… we raise a glass to you, our dear readers, because without you, life would get pretty boring around here!  LOL

See you next year… :)

Goin’ 26 years strong, Sanibel and Captiva Islands continue to delight locals and tourists alike, with one of the most anticipated events of the year – The Annual Luminary Festival!

Starting at dusk this Friday evening, Dec. 3rd, on Sanibel Island (specifically Periwinkle Way), this family-friendly, trail of lights “joyfest” will kick off… with a repeat performance the following evening, Dec. 4th, on Captiva Island (specifically in The Village).

The purpose of this great event has evolved over the years… starting out in the late ’80s as a way to keep the islands in the forefront of peoples’ minds as a “true holiday destination” in between the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday dates, when it tended to get pretty quiet on the islands and local businesses’ coffers got pretty low.

As the years went by, the festival evolved and expanded into a full-blown “excuse” for tourists to plan to be there in order to experience the beauty of the islands all lit up and glowing, in addition to taking part in a real “tight community” atmosphere that personifies locals supporting local businesses and the truest sense of comradery.  The islands shine with personality during this festival and show anyone lucky enough to be there, exactly how great it is to live on and be a part of the Sanibel and Captiva “family”.

Three miles of paper lanterns will light the way to beautiful storefronts, live music and great food!  Don’t miss out because it really is a once-a-year festivity well worth the wait!

If you’re interested (as I was) in the history of this unique event, you can read more about it right here:  History of the Sanibel-Captiva Island Luminary Festival

We will see you there, no doubt…

Have a great week,

Sandy and Rob

A sad day for Sanibel Island… as the news spreads of the passing of a legend, Mr. Sam Bailey.

Born and raised on Sanibel before there was even a causeway connecting the island to the mainland, Sam Bailey has championed this beautiful area of Florida for more than 70 years!

He and his three brothers all worked at the Old Bailey Store, carrying on the family business that began in 1899.  One of the oldest establishments on the island (and all of Southwest Florida, for that matter), the Old Bailey Store is still in business to this day and is currently located at 2477 Periwinkle Way.

“Sanibel Sam”, as he was known, has a very rich and meaningful story, from his days of playing pro-football for the Boston Yanks in the now-defunct AFL, to his head football coaching and athletic director duties at University of Tampa for 60 years!  His interests in the historical preservation of Sanibel Island’s treasures has transformed the island to what it is today.

Nothing will ever be the same on Sanibel without Sam Bailey.

Services will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 2, at the Sanibel Historical Village, 950 Dunlap Road, in tribute to the original location of Old Bailey’s General Store way back in 1899.

A huge wave of gratitude goes out to Sam and the entire Bailey family for their contributions to our personal livelihood today on Sanibel Island…

We hope to see you all at the service to honor and respect this great man…

Thanks for reading and have a very nice weekend,

Sandy and Rob

OK, it’s time we pay tribute to a special group of volunteers right here on Sanibel Island called The Hammerheads!

The Hammerheads are a small group of men consisting of Harry Bertossa, Demo Scutakes, George McKinnell, Wally Kain, Sandy Montclar, Les Forney, Sam Bailey and Dean Skaugstad that volunteer over at the Sanibel Historical Museum and Village. These steady-handed, clear-minded, open-hearted (shall I go on…  :) ) men should make us all proud!

Because it is through their efforts that ALL of the boardwalks at the Museum and Village have been replaced with environmentally-friendly Trex Lumber for the safety of all who visit our beautiful historical site…

Needless to say, you must get out there to 950 Dunlop Road and see their handywork, it’s really somethin’!!

You can read more about Sanibel Historical Museum and Village right here or, of course, you can always refer back to the post I wrote to you on April 16th called “A Walk Down Memory Lane” right here in this blog…

Thanks Hammerheads!  We love you!

Have a great weekend,

Sandy and Rob
