Outboard Motor

As each day brings us closer to the finish of the long-awaited project of Dredging Blind Pass on July 10th, the J.N. “Ding” Darling NWR and Lee County officials will be drawing the boundaries in Wulfert Flats and setting up the buoys that will establish the new “Pole and Troll” zone for boaters to raise their outboard motors out of the water and proceed with caution.

Manatee - Sanibel Island - Blind Pass Dredging

In keeping with our promise to keep you updated on the Blind Pass Dredging project, we are writing an extra post this week showing you the progress that’s being made at Blind Pass.

This Lee County report is for the last week of May and shows that as the project is winding down, and that some unexpected visitors decided to “join the party” and show up for the dredging.

Namely, a manatee entered the work area and approached within 100 feet of  Dredge “Michael” prompting work to shut down until our curious friend left the area!

As well, a shorebird nest was found and caused a slight shift in direction of activity to avoid it.

Lots going on as the project moves toward completion.  You can read all about it below of download it here at Blind Pass Dredging:

Blind Pass Completion - Sanibel Captiva Islands

Well, we are not out of the woods just yet, but as each week goes by, more and more progress and improvement can be seen on Blind Pass.

It’s been awhile since the last update, and more than likely it was because there was a slow-down in dredging the Gulf due to two weeks of heavy waves at the end of April.

But, fortunately, the crew took full advantage of the “downtime” and was able to haul all of the non-beach compatible “debris” away to be disposed of… so, actually, no real time was lost at all.

The good news is that they are right on schedule and expect to make their “beginning of July” deadline for completion, which is amazing considering all that had to be done!

So, they are in the last stretch and will probably only have one more update, which of course, we will bring you as soon as it is available!

Blind Pass Dredging Project - Sanibel Island - March Update

Well, slowly, but steadily, the Blind Pass Dredging Project is making progress.

Despite some mechanical problems with dear old “Dredge Nate”, who has now been relegated to work in the Gulf;   it seems that they are, in fact, moving at a reasonable rate.

An extension of three (3) weeks up to the date of July 8th rather than June 16th, has been added onto the project deadline for the simple fact that additional material has built up over the three year period between 2005 and 2008 when the two different surveys were taken for the proper timeline to be derived.

There also seems to be some concern with the finding of cement, asphalt and cemented seashells in the area, which has also seemed to add to the volume that needs to be removed.  You can see all of the details below:
