Blind Pass Dredging

Say it isn’t so! Blind Pass is starting to fill in again!
This upcoming Wednesday, Feb 9th at 7pm, a public island meeting will be held at The Sanctuary Golf Club at 2250 Wulfert Road for concerned islanders to have access to the Lee County Division of Natural Resources (those responsible for the Blind Pass Dredging Project) to find out exactly what is happening and what their plans are to maintain the channel open for ecologic, as well as economic reasons.
The meeting is being hosted by the Bayous Preservation Association and you can read more about it here: Bayous Preservation Association to hold Blind Pass meeting on Feb 9
As most of you know, the Blind Pass project is an ongoing issue, as we are, in fact, battling against Mother Nature, but it is so important for the water quality and improved access to the different bays for locals and tourists alike.
If you are interested in this issue as much as Rob and I are, you will probably want to attend this meeting and get your questions answered.
Hope to see you there!
Have a great week,
Sandy and Rob

Yes, the fishing is amazing and yes, Pine Island Sound is healthier and happier, but is anyone else noticing that the “sands are definitely shifting” and giving boaters fits in trying to navigate across safely.
Word on the street is that you should still take the long way around the Lighthouse even though Blind Pass is technically “open”. It’s proving to be quite risky for even small boats to maneuver this channel successfully in high or low tide, it’s just too unpredictable.
Here’s an article that also explains some other peoples’ experiences: Blind Pass Navigation Spotty
Only time will tell what Mother Nature decides to do with Blind Pass… but, with all the benefits that having it open provides, let’s just hope that $3.2 million in dredging it wasn’t just flushed under the bridge!

Can you believe it? It seems like just yesterday (last December) that they began work on this massive project and now it is finally complete.
I would be remiss not to show you the final Project Report dated August 26th detailing exactly how everything was finalized.
So, get out there and enjoy the benefits of all the hard work accomplished!

Has the day finally arrived that Blind Pass is open? Well, sorta.
It seems Blind Pass, itself, was anxious to open up and jumped the gun by splitting its retaining wall a tad earlier than the contractors had planned. After the final dredging was completed on Friday, Mother Nature decided, “Ok, that’s it, I’m goin’ in!” and stirred up a storm with waves that broke through the sheet pile wall and let the Gulf flow right on in!
One group that’s excited for sure is the fishermen! Now, they have their favorite fishing “hole” back. Another group is the homeowners that live along the channel that now have their direct boat access to the Gulf back after losing it for all these years. This is a dream come true for them.
But, more importantly than anything else, are the improvements that will be seen over time in the ecosystems that have not been able to receive the water flow from the Gulf keeping the environment healthy and in flux for wildlife, for plant life and for us to enjoy!
If you haven’t seen the work done yet, you should take a drive out there and have a look, it’s pretty impressive.
Here’s a couple of links to some recent articles on the topic as well:
Ok, that’s it for this week…
Have a great weekend!

As we are trying to keep everyone informed of the Blind Pass “goings-on”, I felt it was important to post an article written yesterday by Mike Mullins, the Chairman of the Captiva Erosion Prevention District (CEPD) airing his concerns about the delays that have been occurring as the project is scheduled to come to an end.
I think he makes some valid points in his well-written article and I just wanted to make sure that you saw it.

Well, here’s the latest and greatest on our Blind Pass Dredging Project as of the July 3rd update:
- The last half of June unfortunately did not cooperate weather-wise in letting Dredge Nate out into the Gulf to finish its work, and therefore, has prompted a request to Lee County for a two-week extension to get the job finished up properly.
- The “Pole and Troll” buoys haven’t been placed as of yet, but when they are placed in Wulfert Flats, enforcement of the zone will go immediately into effect.
- Expected date of project completion is now anticipated for July 25th barring that the weather cooperates.
