This 12-year-old girl from Cape Coral who always vacations off the coast of the Keys with her family was fascinated by a sunken ship as she snorkeled with her brother and decided to create something really interesting out of her curiosity.
The article, “12-year-old snorkeler develops documentary of sunken ship” explains that Delanie Kirwan got all the permits necessary to film the wreckage and has discovered that it was the personal yacht of Henry Ford, which at one point, was docked a good portion on Sanibel Island. Fancy that!
It’s a nice article that was a breath of fresh air in the midst of the typical bleak news these days!
Hope you all have a great long weekend and Happy 4th!!

Update to the post below:
It is with great sadness to inform you, that on Sunday, Feb 28th, Ted Cross passed away at the age of 86 in Ft. Myers, FL. The post below written just one week ago is a timely reminder of a great man and just how much Sanibel will miss him. Our condolences go out to Ted’s family and friends and we thank you, Ted, for all of your great contributions to our islands and to the world! You can read the NY Times article about Ted right here.
Hey all,
Today I thought we should put the spotlight on a very special winter resident on Sanibel Island – Theodore (Ted) Cross!
An amazing photographer that has a great story to tell and even better photos to show… a true genius behind the lens!
There is a beautifully written story about him on TampaBay.com by Jeff Klinkenberg detailing his life and quite profound thoughts on birds, photography and travel. I think everyone can glean something from reading about Ted and his life.
I know it’s cliche to say that “Everyone has a story to tell”… but some stories truly need to be told.
Ted Cross is one of those people and we thank Jeff Klinkenberg for doing such a great job in telling it! Thanks Jeff!
So, head over to read the entire article and get ready to be inspired!
If you are in the mood for some great entertainment, I can highly recommend the Herb Strauss Schoolhouse Theater which has been putting on performances off and on for the past 116 years!
What a story behind this little “theater that could”… it just keeps chuggin’ along, getting better and better over its long up-and-down history…
With the help of amazing patrons, donors, actors and of course, a wanting audience, The Schoolhouse Theater is thriving today and providing the ONLY professional musical theater on all of Sanibel Island.
Located at 2200 Periwinkle Way, the Herb Strauss Schoolhouse Theater is currently featuring “Unnecessary Farce”… a comedy about two policemen… well, I won’t give it away!
Woo hoo! We’re gonna be famous… We’re gonna be famous!
The reason that I’m so excited is because one our friends, Rusty Farst, over at Video Biography, LLC has created a fun little short film for the big screen about Sanibel Island called “Sandbars To Sanibel”.
Filmed entirely on the island, Rusty and his crew set out to show a historical perspective of the modern Sanibel Island that we all know and love today.
The official unveiling of this “straight-from-the-heart” project will be at Big Arts on November 12th, 2009 during the Celebrate Sanibel Festivities with a big red carpet event and everything! I can’t wait!!
However, Rusty and his team will be having a screening at the Island Cinema in October to raise the funds necessary to bring this homegrown “gem” to the public. So, we sure hope that you can come along and help out…
And guess what? You can see the actual trailer below…….. So, enjoy and be sure to leave your comments below to tell what you reeeally think!!
Have a great weekend,
Sandy and Rob
p.s. SanCap One Source loves a good movie flick, especially when it hits so close to home… Thanks Rusty for all of your efforts!
Artists are a great bunch! So relaxed, so pensive in the way they approach most everything. Just a perfect fit for the island environment here on Sanibel and Captiva.
I think that is why there are so many artists and art-inspired activities on these islands, for young and old alike. It is like putting a great chef in a well-stocked kitchen with every ingredient known to man and saying “Have at it!” They are in heaven!
Here on Sanibel and Captiva, even if you’re not a “gourmet chef” (to stick with the analogy), we sure help you practice and become the best artist that you can be (in whatever art form you choose).
So, if you love the arts and you are moving to Sanibel Island, then you will be in for a real treat!
Below I have listed the websites of the different groups that you can peruse and find out how to get involved, even as a spectator, if that’s your thing.
Enjoy the beauty, soak it in and we’ll see you at the next sunset, paintbrush in hand!
