Green Homes on Sanibel Island

Today we have some really cool news for you!

Last week it was announced that a special community of 12 single-family homes is being planned on a 12-acre property along Periwinkle Way.

This will be Sanibel’s first ever “all green” development created from scratch and it’s expected to be fully sustainable, in and of itself, by utilizing the island’s natural resources, including wind, sunshine, rain and foliage, to power these eco-friendly homes.

The University of Florida’s School of Architecture is joining forces with the Florida Community Design Center (FLCDC) in an effort to prove that we can create modern, affordable and comfortable homes here on the island and be on the cutting edge of environmental issues to combat global warming.  So, it’s back to basics!

We, on Sanibel, are thrilled to take part in a project that hopes to become the model for future sustainable communities in coastal regions.  It’s a great opportunity to once again allow Sanibel Island to shine with our unique, forward-thinking approach to nearly everything!

You can read more about the project here at Captiva-Sanibel.com

Hope you have a great weekend…

Until next week,

Rob and Sandy

Blind Pass Dredging Project - Sanibel Island - March Update

Well, slowly, but steadily, the Blind Pass Dredging Project is making progress.

Despite some mechanical problems with dear old “Dredge Nate”, who has now been relegated to work in the Gulf;   it seems that they are, in fact, moving at a reasonable rate.

An extension of three (3) weeks up to the date of July 8th rather than June 16th, has been added onto the project deadline for the simple fact that additional material has built up over the three year period between 2005 and 2008 when the two different surveys were taken for the proper timeline to be derived.

There also seems to be some concern with the finding of cement, asphalt and cemented seashells in the area, which has also seemed to add to the volume that needs to be removed.  You can see all of the details below:

Here is the pdf document to download if need be.

Sandy Ramseth with Paradise Hang Gliding

It just doesn’t get any better than this!

Last week I did something that I’ve wanted to do for a looong time and that was “fly like a bird”… I went Hang Gliding over the Gulf!  Wow!

Even better than para-sailing because I was actually flying way higher at 2500 ft above the water, even over the tops of the para-sailers… let me tell you, it was truly a rush!!

I hooked up with none other than Scot over at Paradise Hang Gliding where you could not find a nicer guy to explain exactly what you need to do and to train you for the very gentle takeoff and landing from their boat just offshore.  I was surprised at just how “easy” it was and how relaxed I became AFTER I got into the air.  (Everyone’s a bit nervous before going up, don’t worry, it’s natural!)

Scot even posted on his blog about my “flight” which you can read about right here:  Sandy Ramseth – Paradise Tandem Hang Gliding

So, whether you are a local looking for something new to experience, a tourist on vacation, or someone planning to move to this beautiful area and wondering if there are great activities to partake in, this is one experience that you must try!  It is unforgettable (and affordable)!  So no excuses!!

I have an actual video of my own personal flight below, but it isn’t taken from above like the video that you see on the Paradise Hang Gliding website.   You can also see my video if you click on my Fackbook badge on the right side of this blog and then click on my “Videos” section within my Facebook page.  And there it is.

So, I hope this inspires you on many levels to get out there and do something new and exciting!

My job is to help you see just how amazing it is to live in this beautiful place and also to know just how to enjoy every minute of it!

Have a great long Easter weekend!

We’ll see you next week,

Water Conservation Month - Sanibel Island Florida

Did you know that April is Water Conservation Month in Florida?

No time like the present to brush up on some of our daily habits that could use a little improvement.

Did you also know any of these little facts?

Water Conservation Tips - Sanibel Island

April is Water Conservation Month because it’s one of the “driest” months of the year here in Florida and therefore, many more people are out watering their lawns and changing out their pool water.

Water conservation on Sanibel and Captiva is managed by two organizations:

The Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation and the Island Water Association (IWA).  Here is a fascinating old (very old) document outlining the actual History of the Water Conservation, Sanitation and Salination processes on Sanibel and Captiva Islands dating back to the 1950s.

I also came across a handy list for saving on water use, as we all seem to take clean and plentiful water for granted these days and we shouldn’t.

You can download the pdf document here.

Here you go:

Lastly, I found another couple of great links for tips on saving water through effective Yard Landscaping and Gardening, as well as a great Home Water Use Audit (click to download) below that you can check out and see how you’re doing right now with regards to your current water habits!

So, think of this post as you water your lawns this month, ok?  :)
